January 1st is a time when many will create lists of New Year’s Resolutions. I like to put my Business Analyst hat on and look at what will motivate me for the coming year.
I start with a look back at the previous year. Lessons Learned does not just work for business. What worked for me, despite the global pandemic, and what didn’t work for me, including that same global pandemic, are important lessons to examine. I look at my goals from last year and celebrate any progress that was made, and strive to understand what kept me from reaching some of those goals.
Here’s a secret – I’m a bullet journaler. Not the ones who create epic works of art, but more closely linked to the Ryder Carolle original Bullet Journal Method. (check out more about that here: https://bulletjournal.com/) As a result, I have a wealth of information to search through to understand what worked and what did not work for me over the previous 12 months.
I then turn my gaze forward and start with selecting a “Word of the Year”. This word may change as the year progresses, but it is a beacon that serves to remind me of what I want to focus on. I believe goals are important, whether it is for personal or professional endeavours. This “Word of the Year” is the link between the goals and your future accomplishments.
For 2020, my word was “Renew”. It included personal goals such as completing the requirements to renew my CBAP certification (a requirement every three years). It also included the renewal of work contracts, and the renewed commitment to financial goals.
So what were the contenders for 2021 you might ask? Hope, Resilience, Overcome, Achieve, and Determination all made the shortlist. The one word that kept swirling in my mind, and now my word of the year for 2021?
Possibilities!
I see many wonderful possibilities for 2021, including where I hope to take Business Analysis for Me. I hope you will follow along and join in yourself.
I will wish you all the best for a safe and happy 2021. May you reflect on your New Year, see all the possibilities in front of you, and reach for all that this world has to offer too.
